1 Corinthians 16: 10 But if Timothy comes, make sure he has no reason to be afraid while he is with you, for he does the work of the Lord, as I do. 11 Therefore let no one despise him. But send him on his way in peace so that he may come to me, because I am expecting him, and so are the brothers with me. 12 Now concerning our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. It was not at all his desire to go now, but he will when he has an opportunity. (EHV)
We should appreciate all the gifts which God has given to his church, and not just those who have the stellar, superstar reputations. It seems to me that Paul was the superstar church planter, and that men like Timothy and Titus and Apollos followed Paul around to strengthen and organize what Paul had started. Paul recognized these gifts in Timothy and Apollos and encouraged the Corinthians to receive them and respect them.
I think of people that I worked with, whose gifts I appreciated. I worked with a staff minister who had a good eye for detail, something that I don’t have. I worked with another pastor who tended to question my plans. Sometimes that annoyed me, but it made me look over what I was planning before I charged ahead foolishly. I worked with another who was a joy to brainstorm with, because he had unbounded enthusiasm for reaching people with the gospel. The point I want to make (especially for myself!) is that ministry is done better when gifted people work together, rather than one person working on his own.
Paul treasured those people with whom he worked. You never hear him criticize them, only encourage them in their work. His words of criticism were reserved for those who were teaching false doctrine.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers. You have given gifts to your church so that your body, the Church, can work together and be built up. Help us to work together in peace and unity for the good of your Church! Amen.
