Mark 1:29-34: As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. (NIV)

One of the things that makes Mark’s gospel unique is that he loves to tell the stories of Jesus’ miracles. An early church father wrote that Mark received his information about Jesus from the apostle Peter. You will often see intimate details about Peter’s actions in this gospel, like the story of Jesus’ healing Peter’s mother-in-law. Notice the detail in the story, that she immediately got up to wait on them. Can you imagine the scene? She is deathly ill in bed with a fever. Jesus heals her and she gets up and says, “I better make some dinner.” When Jesus healed people, they were immediately and completely healed. Every miracle recorded reminds us that Jesus is the Son of God.

So why did he tell the demons he drove out not to speak? The simplest explanation is that nothing that comes out of the devil’s mouth is useful or to be trusted. Even when they acknowledged that he was the Son of God, he silenced them, for nothing good can ever come out of Satan’s words.

As we witness these miracles in the gospel of Mark, we ought to confirm two important truths that the miracles of Jesus tell us about him. First, that he is the almighty Son of God. He can do ANYTHING. And second, that he cares for us in our hour of need. He cares when you are sick with a fever, or hungry for food, or suffering from a handicap. He cares for us all the way to the cross, where he gave his life as a ransom for our sins. We can say with confidence, “What a friend we have in Jesus!”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, be with me today and every day, because life would not be complete without you!  Let me learn of you and let me praise you, for you are my Savior and my ever present help in times of trouble. Amen.
