Mark 1:40-45: A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” 41 Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.  43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere. (NIV)

The man knew that Jesus could heal him, but he placed himself in Jesus’ hands when he said, “If you are willing.” Don’t we do the same with all of our prayers? Jesus taught us to pray, “Your will be done.” Our God and Savior always knows what is best for us. Eventually we will die, if not from this disease, then from another. This story invites us to put ourselves in Jesus’ hands, because we know that these two things are true about Jesus. He is all powerful and can do anything he chooses to do. And he loves us dearly and will always do what is best for us. “Lord, if you are willing , you can make me clean.”

Did you notice that Jesus touched the leper? Technically, this would have made Jesus ceremonially unclean. But we can also argue that since his touch made the man clean, Jesus did not become unclean. How long had it been since another human being had touched him? We see more evidence of the compassionate heart of our Savior. Someday Jesus will wrap his arms around us, sinners who have been washed and cleansed by his own blood.

It may seem strange that he told him not to tell anyone. We see why when the man spread the news, and it kept Jesus from moving freely through a town because of the crowds. Don’t let miracles get in the way of seeing Jesus as your Savior. If you demand a miracle from him, you may be disappointed. If you submit to Jesus’ will, you will never be disappointed.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I will never hold back from asking for your forgiveness, because I know it is your will to forgive all my sins. But in the difficulties of life, when I face illness or even death, I will always pray, “Your will be done.” It is enough to know that you cared enough for me to die for my sins.  Amen.
