Mark 3:20-21: Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”  (NIV)

Why?  Why would Jesus’ family think that he was out of his mind to the point that they thought they had to “take charge of him?”  Was Mary part of the family delegation as well? It would seem so, especially if this is a parallel story to Matthew 12:46. This had to hurt Jesus deeply! He was always the perfectly obedient son. He was always the perfect brother. Even as the oldest, he would not have lorded it over his brothers as older brothers can sometimes do. He never made fun of them. He never made them do work that he was able to do himself. Why did they not believe in him? Because familiarity breeds contempt. They thought he was out of his mind.

C. S. Lewis said this about Jesus. “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God.” [Mere Christianity, 1952]

You cannot believe in Jesus as just a good teacher, or a good brother, for that matter. He was and is the Son of God. A good teacher cannot be our Savior. Only the Son of God can be our Savior. Only the death of God’s Son can make an atonement for our sins. So make your choice. Liar or lunatic or the Son of God. I think you know how Mark would answer that question.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are God almighty. You are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. If you were anything less, I would have no Savior! Thank you for coming into this world and even enduring the messiness of family who did not at first accept you for what you are. Amen.
