Mark 3:31-35: Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” 33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. 34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (NIV)
Satan is not afraid to use our earthly relationships to keep us from Jesus. I have witnessed this too often in my ministry. A lovely Christian marries someone who is not a Christian. They are determined to keep their Christian faith strong. Yet, the pull on their relationship with Jesus grows stronger every single day. There is seldom a single ultimatum, only small ones that take their toll. Going to church alone means leaving the other at home alone and unhappy. There is an ultimatum of silence every Sunday.
When word came that Jesus’ mother and brothers were outside, everybody expected him immediately to go out and see them. But Jesus didn’t. Instead he looked around at the people listening to him and said these strange words: “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Did he no longer love his family? No. He was simply conveying that his tie to the people who listened to his Word was even stronger than love for family. THink about that for a moment. Jesus loves you more because you are connected to him by faith than he loved his mother and brothers. You know how much you treasure the family ties you have with siblings and parents and children. The tie that ties you to Jesus is even greater, because he will never fail you, because your relationship to him is forever.
There can be only one primary relationship in our lives. That relationship is the one we have in Jesus through faith. Every other relationship is secondary, no matter how important that relationship is to us. And by your relationship to Jesus, you will be a better husband, a better wife, a better son or daughter or brother or sister.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, how blessed I am that you should call me your brother, and that is what I am. I have been clothed in your righteousness and baptized in your name. I have been blessed with brothers and sisters in Christ in my family and in my church. Let me be yours forever! Amen.
