Mark 4:1-8; Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” (NIV)
We’ll study the explanation of this parable in a couple of days. Today I am reminded of how Jesus taught, especially when he wanted to explain to people what the “kingdom of God” is like. God’s kingdom is his rule in the hearts of believers through his Word. It is not the visible church, but the invisible Church. He peels back the layers of what we see and allows us to see what God sees. He unmasks our pretentiousness and our hypocrisy and shows us what is real in the kingdom of God.
What do we learn from this parable? The Word of God is like seed that is planted. While God’s Word is powerful and effective, it isn’t always well received. Some people just won’t listen. Others may listen for a moment and then turn aside. And some will believe and their lives will be forever changed. The lesson that I learn from this parable is that I should not worry about whether or not God’s Word will work in a certain person’s heart, or in a certain neighborhood. My job as one of Jesus’ disciples is just to go out and plant the seed, because even if it isn’t always well received, some will believe.
I don’t know why I remember this statistic. As a child, I remember my father saying that he planted about 18,000 seeds of corn per acre. We usually harvested about a hundred bushel per acre. Today farmers will plant up to 35,000 seeds per acre, and harvest more than two hundred bushels per acre. The only control that I have in regard to God’s kingdom is this. I can plant more seeds and trust God’s Word to work as he wills.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, your Word is powerful. Some will believe it and some will not. I pray that you will use me to plant the seeds of your Word in as many hearts as I can, and to trust in you to make it grow as you will. Amen.
