Mark 4:13-20: Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” (NIV)
Jesus explains the parable of the sower and the seed. In my ministry, I have seen examples of each one of them. Sometimes people just didn’t listen. Sometimes they listened for a little while, and then they just drifted away. Others got involved in messy things in their lives that crowded out their faith and their continuing in God’s Word. And there were some that couldn’t get enough of God’s Word and matured in their Christian faith and life. This parable has always encouraged me not to become discouraged when my preaching and teaching didn’t seem to have the effect I was hoping for.
But I also have to read this from a personal point of view. It allows me to examine closely my personal devotional life. Sometimes, when I read my bible, the words never really get to my heart because I wasn’t listening. Lord, forgive me! Sometimes, when I devote on God’s Word, it strikes my conscience and moves me to change my habits. But then I slip back to my old ways. Lord, forgive me! Sometimes I get caught up in the busy work of life and I don’t make time for Bible study and prayer. Lord, forgive me! And sometimes, God’s word makes such a difference in my faith and life that I am overwhelmed by God’s amazing grace. Lord, I thank you!
So I must apply to my personal devotional life what I have applied to my ministry. I will not be discouraged when I have failed to live up to God’s Word. It is not the fault of God’s Word but my own alone, and my gracious and merciful God forgives me. But I am confident that if I continue in his Word, then God the Holy Spirit will work in my heart, preserve my faith, and produce fruits of repentance.
Prayer: May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Amen. (Psalm 19:14)
