Mark 4:24-25: “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” (NIV)

Remember the context of these words in this chapter. Jesus told the parable of the sower, a parable which encourages us to listen to God’s Word and to take it to heart so that what is planted may produce a rich harvest in us. Then Jesus tells us not to put the light of God’s Word under a bowl or under the bed, but to share it with others so that they will not live in darkness. Here he promises that whoever listens to his Word and shares it with others will be given even more.

Two thoughts come to mind. In Philemon 6, Paul says, “I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of everything we have in Christ” (NIV84).  Other translations differ somewhat on this verse, but it has been my experience that this is true. When I have studied God’s Word and taught it to others, it has had a far greater impact on myself than it probably has had on others. Every teacher of God’s Word will tell you this. Teaching God’s Word is rewarding because it allows you to grow in your faith. So in effect, when you give away God’s Word to others, you have even more.

The second thought is this. Studying God’s Word and sharing it with others is always a good investment of my time. I grow in my faith. I become a better human being in every way. I am more content, happier, more fulfilled. The other side of the coin is also true. Investing my time in all the worldly things that are urgently calling for my attention is usually a waste of time. It is a distraction to my faith. It causes me to degenerate as a human being. It makes me less content, less fulfilled, less at peace.

What I need to remember is that this is not just one choice that I make in my life, but a culmination of a lot of little choices every day. It is so important that it deserves a place on my daily calendar. I pray that Jesus will keep me on task so that God’s Word will always remain the highest priority in my life.

Prayer: Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. Amen.  (Psalm 119:97-99)
