Mark 6:6-13: Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. 8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. (NIV)
If you look at the mission that Jesus gave his disciples, it was basically to do what he was doing. They preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins. They drove out demons and healed people as well, not by their own power, but by Jesus’ power. They traveled light and relied on the generosity of the people to whom they preached. Jesus made disciples so that they could in turn make disciples of others.
I think that if I had to do my ministry all over again, I would spend more time training a handful of people at a time to do the work of the ministry. When they were ready, then I would train a handful more. It was so easy to get caught up in doing the work of the ministry and do the work yourself instead of taking the time to train others. There is no reason that trained lay people couldn’t make hospital visits and visit the homebound and follow up on prospects. Besides, ministry work is very rewarding. Why should the lay person miss out on all the fun?
The bottom line is that more work got done by training the twelve and sending them out than if Jesus had done it all himself. If Jesus could train fishermen and tax collectors and others to do mission work, so can we.
Prayer: You called us to be kings and priests in your kingdom. Help us to see the opportunities for ministry all around us, and make most of every opportunity to call the lost to repentance. Amen.
