Mark 6:35-44: By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.” 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. (NIV)

Do you know what liberal minded theologians do with this story? They say the real miracle was that when the little boy came forward to share his lunch, it made all the other people ashamed so that they opened up their secret hiding places and shared their lunch, too. They say this because they want to deny any miracles in the Bible that are not scientifically possible—even to the point of denying that Jesus rose from the dead.

How sad they miss the beauty of this story. Our Savior, who is God Almighty, is not only concerned with our salvation, but even with our daily bread. And if it takes a miracle, even if it is only a minor miracle, then that’s what Jesus will do to provide our needs. I remember after our first child was born and we had bills to pay in my final year at the seminary. My part-time job at the apple orchard had run out. Then, in January, when things were getting tight, three things happened in one week. I got a scholarship that I didn’t even apply for. Our landlord sold the house we were living in to the state for road improvements, and made a deal so that we could live there rent free for six months. And the secretary at the seminary called me to the office with another part time job offer.

How has Jesus provided for you in your life? He is still God, and he still cares that we have our daily bread to eat.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, for food and drink and house and home, we give our thanks and praise. Teach me to be content with my daily food and thankful for it as well. Amen.
