Mark 7:6-13: He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ 8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” 9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” (NIV)
The Pharisees were the epitome of what it means to be a self-righteous legalist. They used the law to justify themselves. They honored their traditions even above the law. And they misused the law to excuse otherwise evil behavior in their lives. Jesus unmasks their hypocrisy. He cites an example of one of those practices.
In answer to the Pharisees’ question, Jesus told them that they had rejected the commandment of God in order to keep their own tradition. Jesus gives the proof of their corruption of the Law by citing their use of “Corban.” Moses had instructed God’s people to “honor their father and mother” (Exodus 20:12), but the Pharisees negated that command by teaching that they could give money to the temple in lieu of helping their parents in need. Whatever money might have been used to provide for aging parents could be dedicated to the temple treasury instead. Saying, “It is Corban,” would exempt a person from his responsibility to his parents. In other words, the Pharisees took a legitimate Corban offering and used it in an illegitimate and devious way to defraud their parents (and enrich themselves). But in their minds, “it was perfectly legal.” Just not right!
Before we condemn the Pharisees, perhaps we should unmask the hypocrisy in ourselves. Have we ever justified doing something we knew wasn’t right because we found a way to justify it by the law? “It’s perfectly legal!” is a phrase we aren’t afraid to use, is it? It’s not right to sell a car with hidden problems, but “it’s perfectly legal.”
Remember that before God, we are always unmasked. We can never get away with our hypocrisy. But even without our masks, Jesus still loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I am thankful that I cannot wear a mask of pretense before you. I may get away with such hypocrisy with people, but not with you. Forgive me, Lord, even for my hypocrisy! Amen.
