Mark 7:31-37: Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” (NIV)
Another miracle. We may grow tired of reading about Jesus’ miracles. Shame on us! Can you read about this miracle and put yourselves in the deaf man’s shoes for a moment? There was nothing about this miracle that was old hat to him. For once in his life, he could hear. For once in his life, he could speak clearly, even though before this time he never really heard how certain words should sound.
Today my thoughts focus on one phrase in our text. The people were saying, “He does everything well.” I can’t say that about myself. Not even close. I may be successful, but that doesn’t mean that I do everything well. In fact, my life like yours is littered with failures left and right. Paul reminds us in Romans 3. “There is no one who does good, not even one.” Nothing we do rises to the level of “good” in God’s eyes! They tried to find fault with Jesus on many occasions, but no one could. Jesus did everything well.
And that is my comfort before God in heaven. Paul said in Galatians 3 that all who have been baptized into Christ have clothed themselves with Christ. I think of this truth every day when I pray the Lord’s Prayer. I am God’s dear child because I am clothed with Christ through baptism. It is not what I have done, but what Jesus has done for me. “He has done everything well.”
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I lack for nothing before God because you are mine and I am yours. Teach me to live each day as a child of God. Amen.
