马可福音8:1-10
1 那时，又有许多人聚集，并没有什么吃的。耶稣叫门徒来，说：2 「我怜悯这众人；因为他们同我在这里已经三天，也没有吃的了。3 我若打发他们饿着回家，就必在路上困乏，因为其中有从远处来的。」4 门徒回答说：「在这野地，从哪里能得饼，叫这些人吃饱呢？」5 耶稣问他们说：「你们有多少饼？」他们说：「七个。」6 他吩咐众人坐在地上，就拿着这七个饼祝谢了，擘开，递给门徒，叫他们摆开，门徒就摆在众人面前。7 又有几条小鱼；耶稣祝了福，就吩咐也摆在众人面前。8 众人都吃，并且吃饱了，收拾剩下的零碎，有七筐子。9 人数约有四千。耶稣打发他们走了，10 随即同门徒上船，来到大玛努他境内。

Mark 8:1-10: During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.” 4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?” 5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied. 6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

Modern critics of the authenticity and inspiration of the Scriptures have a field day with this story. They claim that the stories have one source from “oral tradition,” and that Mark mistakenly recorded them as two stories. If this is the case, then it calls in doubt everything that Mark and the other gospel writers wrote.
It is obvious that these are two stories. The numbers are different. The place is different. Even the words used for the baskets are different. So how do you explain the fact that the disciples failed to see how they could feed so many in this remote place? I look at my own journey through life and see all the mistakes I made that were clones of previous mistakes that I made. We are not unlike Abraham, who twice tried to pass off his wife as his sister, not once but twice. What we can learn from this story is the wonderful patience of Jesus, both with his disciples and with us.
One other not so small lesson confronts my heart in this story. Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. Thank God for your groceries. Thank God for your daily food. And maybe, when you jump into your car and drive to work, thank God for your car, too. As you walk through the door of your house, thank God for the roof over your head. God’s abundant blessings are evident everywhere.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the Bible, that contains no errors. Thank you for my daily bread, and all that you have provided for my life. Thank you for my faith in Jesus, your Son, which you have given me through your Holy Spirit. Amen.
