Mark 9:5-8: Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. (NIV)
I can imagine Peter relating this story to Mark and saying, “I was so scared I had no idea what I was saying.” It has that personal touch of an eyewitness account. But why was Peter afraid? Should he be afraid of Moses or Elijah, these great icons from the past? Should he be afraid of Jesus, shining in all his glory as the Son of God? You would think not. But that’s what happens when sinful human beings are in the presence of the glory of holiness. We see that same reaction even when believers are confronted by one of God’s holy angels. The shepherds in Bethlehem were “sore afraid” (KJV).
At the end, they saw Jesus, no longer shining in glory, and they were not afraid. That’s what Jesus does for us, too. He makes it possible to see God’s glory without being afraid. When we see God in the face of Jesus, it radiates with God’s love and kindness, God’s grace and mercy. When we see God in Jesus, we can stop being afraid. We know that our lack of holiness will never keep us from our blessed Savior! Peter wanted to put up a tent to capture the moment. God has given us something better. He has given us Jesus in his Word so that the “moment” never leaves us.
“This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” the Father says. Jesus has shown us the Father. His words are life for our souls and light for our hearts. If you want to put up a shelter to capture the moment, then listen to Jesus. Through his Word, we see the glory of God in the face of Jesus.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for showing us God’s glory in a way that does not terrify our hearts! Be with me today and every day as I go to your Word and bring your presence into my life. I ask this in your name. Amen.
