Mark 13:14-19: “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. (NIV)

It is evident that Jesus is talking about the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. when he says, “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” This wouldn’t apply to the end of the world, when there will be no time to flee Christ’s second coming. Jesus also quotes from a prophecy of Daniel that was fulfilled first when Antiochus (164 B.C.) set up a pagan altar in the temple. In the same way the Romans would desecrate the temple in Jerusalem. Joseph the historian describes the destruction of Jerusalem and how terrible it would be for those who remained. He also says that Christians saw it coming and fled.

What do we learn from this short prophecy? Nothing that ever came out of the mouth of Jesus failed to come true. We can be thankful that a respected historian like Josephus left a record so that we can again be reassured that “the Scriptures cannot be broken.” Archaeologists in the Holy Land are said to work with a shovel in one hand and a Bible in the other. For years, historians questioned whether the governor Pontius Pilate really existed, because his name never really appears anywhere—until they found the back of a governor’s chair in Caesarea with Pilate’s name on it buried in the sand. Because this prophecy is confirmed, I can be sure that everything Jesus says about his coming on the last day will also take place. The Scriptures cannot be broken. Or, as Isaiah said, “The Word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8).

Prayer:  Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. Amen.  (Psalm 119:89-93)
