Mark 13:32-37: “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’” (NIV)

It’s a puzzle to us how Jesus could be true God and yet, according to his human nature, not know the day or the hour of the final judgment. But then, if we could solve the puzzle of how Jesus could be both true God and true man in one person, we could solve this puzzle as well. Someone in a Bible class asked me if the Holy Spirit knows the day or hour, since Jesus says “but only the Father.” I have to confess that I don’t know the answer to that question. Sometimes in our very limited human reason, it is best to leave some mysteries unsolved. I am content to wait until I stand before the throne to have a lot of questions answered.

The point of what Jesus is teaching us, though, is very clear. Because we do not know the day or the hour, we should keep watch. Don’t immerse yourselves with the things of this world and lose focus on the kingdom of God. For most who lose faith, it doesn’t happen all at once. It happens slowly over time because it is not attended to. Our hearts are like those old cars that are slowly leaking oil. Unless you check the oil often and add more in a timely way, it will eventually leak out all together and the engine will be ruined. That’s what happens to faith, too, when it is not continually restored by the Word of God. So keep watch! Check your faith often! Be renewed daily in the Word!

Prayer:  Even so, come, Lord Jesus!  And while we wait, Lord, remind us to continue in your Word so that our faith may never leak away. Amen.
