Mark 14:10-11: Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over. (NIV)

The story of Judas is a powerful warning that the love of money can be seductive and destructive to our faith. We know from the other gospel that the person who quickly objected to Mary’s outrageous “waste” of expensive perfume was Judas. We also know that he was helping himself to what was in the common treasury of Jesus’ and his disciples. All that money wasted. It could have been given to the poor. And for Judas, the only money that wasn’t wasted was what found its way into his own pocket.

This also marked a  terrible turn in Judas’ thinking. Jesus was no longer “worth” following, because Jesus was content to live in poverty. He praised generosity. He warned against being rich. He probably hoped that the earthly kingdom that he mistakenly thought Jesus would establish would need a trusted treasurer.  In his pursuit of earthly treasures, Judas gave up on the greatest treasure of them all, Jesus.

We think we are not like Judas at all, but earthly treasures are seductive. Do you worry when the stock market tanks and you see your investments decimated? Your future is not in the bank, but in Jesus. Do you work ungodly hours to “get ahead” instead of living with less and enjoying your family more?  You will regret that choice later! Are you disappointed because you can’t keep up with our neighbors?

There is only one Treasure that is worth guarding with our lives, and that is the treasure we have in Jesus. Everything else will disappoint us, as Judas learned. Only Jesus can satisfy our soul’s desire.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, whom have I in heaven but you? Earth has nothing I desire besides you. My strength and my heart may fail, but you are the strength of my life and my portion forever. Amen.(Psalm 73)
