Mark 14:22-23: While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” 26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. (NIV)

What strikes me today as I read these words is how simple the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is. Jesus does not prescribe some complicated ritual. We eat the bread and drink the wine while at the same time receiving the body and blood of Christ. You cannot get much simpler than that, unless it is the washing of water in Baptism.

This sacrament unites us with Jesus in a wonderful way. Jesus says that it is the blood of covenant, which takes us back to Jeremiah 31:31-34. There the Lord describes the “new covenant” that he will make with the house of Israel. The bottom line of that covenant is this. “I will forgive their iniquities and remember their sins no more.” Whenever we eat the bread and drink the cup, we are celebrating that covenant which Jesus has made with us.

This sacrament also looks ahead to the future. Jesus says he would not drink from the fruit of the vine until he drinks it new in the kingdom of God. Whenever we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we are reminded of what is yet to come. The communion we experience in the Lord’s Supper is a foretaste of the communion we will celebrate with Jesus in heaven together with all the saints.

This sacrament is so simple, yet deeply meaningful. Through this sacrament, Jesus forgives our sins and assures us of our place at the table in heaven.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for this blessed sacrament through which my sins are forgiven and I am reminded of my place in heaven with you.  Amen.
