Mark 14:47-52: Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.  (NIV)

Are the gospels eye-witness accounts of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, or are they just stories that someone wrote down, using the names of the apostles and evangelists to give credence to what they wrote? We believe that these gospels are inspired eye-witness accounts. There are others who deny the inspiration of Scripture and claim that they are not. Shame on such people who cast doubts on how God inspired the holy writers to record for us!

One of the things that convinces me that these are eye-witness accounts are the details like the ones we have in our text. Who would have imagined including the story of Peter drawing his sword and missing, only cutting off the ear of the high priest’s servant? Or who would have included the detail that there was a young man with them, who was seized by the soldiers, and who fled out of his garment and escaped without his clothes? We’re not sure who that was, but many commentators believe it was Mark himself, leaving this signature detail to the story. After all, the disciples had fled, and he was left alone facing the soldiers. Who else would have seen what happened?

The point that Jesus made is important. “But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” What happened in the garden happened because God himself ordained it to happen. So many details of Jesus’ passion are prerecorded in the Old Testament. These things happened because the Scriptures had to be fulfilled. We read them, not just as stories, but as the facts that happened regarding our redemption from sin.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you not only died for our sins and rose again, but you made sure that these things were written down for us, so that we might hear them, believe them and be saved. My prayer is that I would always study your Word with the conviction that you speak to me through them. Amen.
