60大祭司起来站在中间,问耶稣说:“你什么都不回答吗?这些人作见证告你的是什么呢?”61耶稣却不言语,一句也不回答。大祭司又问他说:“你是那当称颂者的儿子基督不是?”62耶稣说:“我是。你们必看见人子坐在那权能者的右边,驾着天上的云降临。”63大祭司就撕开衣服,说:“我们何必再用见证人呢?64你们已经听见他这僭妄的话了。你们的意见如何?”他们都定他该死的罪。65就有人吐唾沫在他脸上,又蒙着他的脸,用拳头打他,对他说:“你说预言吧!”差役接过他来,用手掌打他。
以赛亚书53:7说:“又像羊在剪毛的人手下无声,他也是这样不开口。”在那个召集起来只是为了给他定罪的法庭上,耶稣不必回答。应该由法庭提出给他定罪的证据,但是他们找不到任何证据。那天晚上,房间里的每个人都能听到这些指控是多么的虚假,因为耶稣以沉默回应他们这些虚假的指控。
有时候,当批评者对我们提出错误的指控时,沉默也是我们最好的回应。沉默让他们听到自己的话,因为这些错误指控在安静的房间里回响。沉默可以预先阻止我们愤怒的反应,或者说出苦毒的话,这些都会让我们可能事后感到后悔,而且别人可能不会忘记我们的反应。沉默给了我们时间来放慢我们的思绪,重新整理它们,也许是为了提醒我们自己,伤害我们的人是疲惫的,或者忧虑的,或者是其他状态不好的情况。沉默给我们时间去原谅。
但是当他们问耶稣,“你是那当称颂者的儿子基督吗?”。耶稣再也不能保持沉默了。毕竟他就是上帝的儿子。他不能否认这一点,他也不能让人以为他的沉默是在否认自己的身份。此外,即使是在这个非法的、不公正的法庭上,那些审讯他的人也应该听到真相并受到警告。耶稣说,“我是。你们必看见人子坐在那权能者的右边,驾着天上的云降临”。我认为他们听懂了耶稣话语的含意。耶稣的意思是,他就是先知但以理所说的,要来审判世界的那一位。但以理书7:13说:“我在夜间的异象中观看,见有一位像人子的,驾着天云而来,被领到亘古常在者面前,”;耶稣提醒他们要注意现在他们正在控告的是谁。今天他们作为法官审判耶稣,在末日,耶稣将是审判他们的法官。
祷告:主耶稣啊,你为我默默受苦。求你赐给我那天晚上你所运用的力量和智慧,在被控告时赐给我保持沉默的力量,在我必须要回答时,赐给我智慧去回应。祷告奉你的名。阿们。
Mark 14:60-64: Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. (NIV)
Isaiah 53:7 says, “As a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” Jesus did not have to answer in the court that convened to condemn him. It was up to the court to bring evidence of his guilt, which they failed to do. Everyone in the room that night could hear how false these accusations were because Jesus let their words hang in the silence.
Sometimes, silence is the best reaction on our part as well when critics bring false accusations against us. Silence makes them hear their own words as they reverberate in the quiet room. Silence forestalls angry reactions and bitter words on our part that we may later regret and others may not forget. Silence gives us time to slow our thoughts and reorder them, perhaps to remind ourselves that the one who wounded us is weary, or worried, or otherwise out of sorts. Silence gives us time to forgive.
But then they asked Jesus the question, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” He could no longer remain silent. He was after all the Son of God. He could not deny it, and he could not let his silence be perceived as a denial of who he was. Besides, even these men in this kangaroo court deserved to hear the truth and to be warned. “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” I don’t think that they could have missed the implication of Jesus’ words. He was the one of whom Daniel spoke, the one who would come to judge the world. Daniel 7:13 reads, “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.” Jesus put them on notice as to whom they were accusing. Today they were his judges. At the end, he would be theirs.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you suffered in silence for me. Give me the strength and the wisdom you exercised that night, the strength to remain silent when accused, and the wisdom to give an answer when I must. I ask this in your name. Amen.
