Mark 14:72: Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.  (NIV)

Do you know how certain sights or sounds or smells can remind us of things past? If you smell bread baking, you might picture your mother kneading the dough at the kitchen counter. The sound of a school bell might bring back kindergarten memories. Sometimes it is a song, like the song you danced to when you met your spouse.

There was a song that Peter could never get out of his head. It was the song of the rooster crowing in the early morning. When a rooster crows, he rarely crows once. The first crow is getting his throat cleared. The second one rings out louder and more clearly than the first. That sound doesn’t mean much to us, because few of us grew up on the farm. Even farmers don’t always raise roosters. In ancient cities almost every household had chickens and a rooster or two. Peter would hear that voice every morning, a clarion call to repentance.

What sights and sounds and memories call you to repentance for sins in your past? It may be every time a person offers you a drink, and you have to refuse because of the abuse in your past. Or it may be when someone else is called out for a sin you kept well hidden. Or perhaps it is just praying through the commandments that reminds you of your past transgressions.

It wasn’t an accident that Jesus gave Peter a reminder of his sin that would stick with him forever. He wanted Peter to remember that he had a Savior whose forgiveness is greater than any one of his sins. Or mine. Or yours. Maybe you could program your alarm clock to crow like a rooster and wake up every morning to the sound of forgiveness!

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for not letting me forget my sins and for keeping me humble and repenting. I ask only this. Let me never forget the blessed sound of your forgiveness in my heart!  Amen.
