Mark 15:22-26: A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. 25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.  (NIV)

These few short verses give us more information on what Jesus suffered for us. Evidently, Jesus was so weak from all that had happened, the scourging and flogging and standing before six trials, that he could not physically carry his own cross. All the gospels except John mention Simon, the father of Rufus and Alexander. We can assume they became followers of Jesus, too, and a man named Rufus is mentioned at the end of Romans.

Notice that Jesus did not accept the wine mixed with a mild drug called “myrrh.” Why? Because this was the hour of salvation. He could not afford to have his mind clouded. Satan was tempting Jesus by the mockery of his enemies. He did not want to deaden the pain that he was about to suffer. The Son of God must endure the full measure of punishment that our sins require.

Crucifixion was perhaps the cruelest punishment ever devised by man. Men often hung on the cross for days before they died. Dehydration caused cramping in the bodies’ muscles.  Read Psalm 22 for a description of what it felt like. “All my bones are out of joint,” the Messiah said. A raging thirst consumed the one crucified. Yet, death was usually caused by drowning in their own body fluids, because their lungs filled up with water. How awful!

They divided up his clothes and cast lots for them. Mark records the cruel indifference of the soldiers beneath the cross. They cared nothing for his suffering. It was just a job for them. That day they got a small bonus as they claimed Jesus’ clothes. How humiliating for Jesus!

All this he did for you and for me. He saw every one of my sins. None of them was left out when God counted my sins against him. He was condemned for me that I might be completely forgiven. How wondrous this is!

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, I boast in nothing at all except in your cross, in which I have been altogether redeemed and forgiven. Let my life be filled with endless praise for this wonderful act of mercy on your part! Amen.
