37耶稣大声喊叫，气就断了。38殿里的幔子从上到下裂为两半。39对面站着的百夫长看见耶稣这样喊叫断气（有古卷无“喊叫”二字），就说：“这人真是 神的儿子！”40还有些妇女远远地观看，内中有抹大拉的马利亚，又有小雅各和约西的母亲马利亚，并有撒罗米，41就是耶稣在加利利的时候，跟随他、服侍他的那些人，还有同耶稣上耶路撒冷的好些妇女在那里观看。
要让一个罗马百夫长感到害怕和敬畏是很困难的，但即使是他，也必须大声喊出耶稣真的是神的儿子。毫无疑问，这里提到了妇女，因为她们不仅见证了耶稣的死亡，也见证了他的复活。耶稣真的死了。这不是昏迷或假死之类的东西。耶稣真的死了。神的儿子死在十字架上。如果神的儿子的降生让你惊奇，那么神的儿子死在十字架上一定更让你惊奇。神的儿子会这样做吗?会为我死吗?

希伯来书的作者指的是旧约中的赎罪日这一天。每年一次在这天，大祭司带着献祭动物的血进入至圣所，为百姓的罪赎罪。耶稣的死使这个节日不再必要。耶稣既是大祭司，也是祭物。他为我们开了通往天堂和上帝面前的道路，使我们可以活在他面前，从今直到永远。我们可以凭着清洁的良心地站在神面前，昼夜事奉他，因为耶稣的血已经永远除去了我们的罪。耶稣的死真的改变了世界。

Mark 15:37-41: With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” 40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. (NIV)
It takes a lot to frighten and awe a centurion, yet even he had to cry out that Jesus really was the Son of God. The women are mentioned, no doubt, because they were witnesses not only to his death, but also to his resurrection. Make no mistake about it. This was no swooning or coma or something that resembled death. Jesus really died. The Son of God died on the cross. If the Son of God being born amazed you, then the Son of God dying on the cross must amaze you even more. The Son of God would do this? For me?
Mark records an event that happened in conjunction with Jesus’ death. The curtain in the temple was ripped from top to bottom. This was no fragile linen curtain, but a thick woven fabric as thick as a man’s hand. The writer to the Hebrews reminds us of what this means in Hebrews 9:11-14: “But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”
The writer to the Hebrews was referring to the Great Day of Atonement in the Old Testament. Once a year, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies, bearing the blood of the sacrifice, to make an atonement for the sins of the people. Jesus’ death fulfilled that festival. He was the Sacrifice and the High Priest rolled into one. He opened the way to heaven and God for us, so that we might live before him now and forever. We can stand before God with a clear conscience and serve him night and day, because his blood has taken away our sins forever. Jesus’ death really does make all the difference in the world, doesn’t it?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, when I think of my sins and struggle with a guilty conscience, then remind me to think of your death. Remind me that my sins have been atoned for, that nothing will ever separate me from God. Amen.
