Mark 15:42-47: It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid. (NIV)
Such few words and yet so many witnesses! Mark carefully lines them up. Joseph handled the body of Jesus. Jesus was dead. The soldiers certified to Pilate that Jesus was dead. The two Marys were there to see where the body of Jesus was laid. They surely didn’t get the wrong tomb on Easter Sunday morning! Then you have the witness of Scripture. He was buried with the rich in his death (Isaiah 53).
If the death and resurrection of Jesus was nothing more than a cleverly invented story by his disciples and his followers, then the disciples would surely have written themselves into the story. Instead you see two Pharisees who didn’t agree with the decision to crucify Jesus, and two women who knew Jesus and often tended to his needs. Again on Easter morning, we find the women there first at the tomb, not the disciples. Why? Because that is how it happened, not how the disciples would have invented it.
And if the disciples would have made up the story of Jesus’ resurrection, do you think they would have died for those stories? You don’t die for a lie. You die for the truth, and all the disciples died defending the truth except John, who died in prison of natural causes. To a man they took this story to the grave with them because it was the truth.
And so can we. We can take this story to the grave with us. We can take the story of a blessed Savior, who was and is God Almighty, who came into this world to die for those who did not deserve it. We can take this story to the grave with us, because Jesus’ resurrection guarantees our resurrection on the last day. Jesus died, and we died with him. Alleluiah! Jesus rose, and we are no longer dead in our sins, but alive with him. Alleluiah! Jesus rose, and we will live with him eternally. Alleluia!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, when I think of my sins and struggle with a guilty conscience, then remind me to think of your death. Remind me that my sins have been atoned for, that nothing will ever separate me from God. Amen.
