Mark 16:1-5: When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.(NIV)
People who want to discredit the resurrection story will point to discrepancies between the four gospel accounts. For example, was there one angel, or two? Luke’s story has two, while Mark has one. The fact that there are differences in the account actually gives credence to the witnesses. Investigators at the scene of a crime will try to piece together what happened from witnesses. They will tell you that the stories they hear vary greatly, depending on what people saw and when and from what angle. In fact, when all the witnesses agree on all the details, they will think that something is fishy. Did the witnesses talk together to “get their facts straight?” That’s why investigators will separate witnesses before they question them. The eyewitnesses of the resurrection tell the same story, but not all the details are the same.
For example, did Mark choose to mention only one angel because when he heard the women tell their story, they were focused on the angel who spoke and didn’t mention the other? Or did all the women meet at the tomb as one group, or did they perhaps arrive about the same time and not exactly at the same time? Matthew mentions an angel sitting on the stone, which was outside. Mark places the angel inside. If there were two angels, as Luke records, there was probably one inside and one outside. Mark only mentions the one inside. While there are different details in every story, none of the stories actually disagree. There are no contradictions, only different witnesses relating what they saw and heard.
The point is that Jesus really did rise from the dead. The eyewitnesses reported it. The Scriptures in the Old Testament prophesied it. Jesus appeared himself to many of the disciples who were still alive when these gospels were written.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, let my heart never doubt the story of your resurrection, or what it means. You are the Son of God. My sins are forgiven. Someday I will rise in glory as you rose from the dead! Amen.
