Mark 16:15 -20: He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it. (NIV)

Matthew, Luke and John give us much more detail of those forty days between Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension into heaven to the right hand of God. But the marching orders which Jesus gives to his disciples and to his church are clear. Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. What a large task for those few disciples! What a large task this still is for God’s church today!

We live in a world of “limited resources.” We are always counting our pennies and making our budgets. We look at the bottom line and often determine that we can’t do more. We can’t afford another pastor, or another teacher, or another missionary. We should count the cost, as Jesus once told his disciples. At the same time Jesus invites us to look beyond our means and to see that the Lord of the church has unlimited resources at his disposal.

Jesus reminds his little church in Philadelphia of the same thing. “These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:7-8, see also Isaiah 22:22). The “key of David” was the key to the treasury in the times of the kings. Who can ever say that we have “limited resources,” when Jesus is at the right hand of God with the key of David and access to the treasures of God’s kingdom? When we “count the cost,” we dare not lose sight of our Savior, who holds the key of David in his hand.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, as we go about your work of proclaiming the gospel in this world, we pray that you will give us all the resources we  need to accomplish your purpose. Provide us with pastors and teachers and missionaries who are not afraid to go in your name. Give us generous hearts to support your mission to the very ends of the earth. Amen.
