2 Corinthians 1: 12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you. 13 For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and understand and I hope you will fully understand— 14 just as you did partially understand us—that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you. (EHV)

Paul uses a word here that is somewhat unique in his letters to the Corinthians. This version translates the word “simplicity.” Some other versions use a variant reading which means “holiness.” “Simplicity” doesn’t really catch the flavor of the word. I like “single-mindedness of heart.” In other words, it is the opposite of duplicity.

Have you ever run into someone who spoke to you in a way in which you really couldn’t tell what he meant? Someone who intentionally left his words vague enough so that you would think he was saying one thing, when in fact he just led you to believe that? Years ago, when people still sold things door-to-door because Amazon didn’t exist, a good salesman could lead you to believe his product could change the world, or at least your life. You had to take whatever he said with a grain of salt.

Paul boasted that he was not like that. His words were plain and easy to understand. He had no need or desire to embellish or exaggerate on what God had done, because the story of God’s grace in Christ is beyond wonderful just the way it is. He sought no personal favors. He had no ulterior motives. He just came to preach Christ and win the hearts of those who did not know him.

That’s what evangelism is all about. We don’t have to sell ourselves, or our church. We just tell the beautiful, life-changing, amazing story of God’s grace to us in Christ.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, your story of salvation is so wonderful and beautiful that it deserves to be told to every person in this world. Help me to be your servant. Open my mouth to tell your story and declare your praises.  Amen.
