2 Corinthians 2: 12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia. 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.   (NIV)

The “pleasing aroma” that Paul is talking about is the aroma of the sacrifice.  Think of how God was pleased with the sacrifice that Abel brought in Genesis 4. We know from Hebrews 11 that God was pleased with his sacrifice because he offered it with faith, unlike unbelieving Cain.  But in the New Testament, God does not require sacrifices.

Or does he? Paul said in Romans 12 that in view of God’s mercy, we offer our lives as “living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.” He then went on to talk about the spiritual gifts that God has given to us people, and to each one of us as he determined. As we live a godly life in this world out of thankfulness for our salvation, we are a pleasing aroma to God, and to the people in this world around us.

Paul says here that he leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession. When a Roman general returned after war, he would lead the soldiers and kings he fought in a procession through the streets of Rome as evidence of his victory. We are the evidence of Christ’s victory. He has defeated Satan and he has taken us into his kingdom. To the world, we are evidence of Christ’s victory.

We don’t belong to Satan any longer, nor to the world. We belong to Christ. Therefore your life today as evidence of Christ’s victory.

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, let me live my life today and every day as a display to the world that I am yours and you are mine. Let my life be a sacrifice of praise to your name always.  Amen.
