This is one of those passages that a Mormon missionary might throw at you to make you doubt that salvation is by faith and not by works (Romans 3:28). It has been said that you can make Scripture say almost anything by taking it out of context. The verses that follow provide the context that shows us that we are saved by Christ’s work and not our own.
Then what does Paul mean? The fact is that whenever a person has faith, there are always works which follow. Read Ephesians 2:8-10. Sometimes we fail to quote verse 10. After saying that we are saved by grace through faith and not by our works, Paul wrote: “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” I will not hold up my good works and boast about them before God, because God produced those good works in my life.
Read the parable in Matthew 25:31ff about the sheep and the goats. Jesus points out the good works of the believers (the sheep) as evidence of their faith. And the believers wondered, “When did we do this?” because doing good works for believers is as normal as breathing. Jesus pointed out the lack of good works for unbelievers (the goats), and they complained they were being judged unfairly. Why? Because unbelievers do good works, not from a thankful heart, but from a boastful heart. So their good works aren’t good at all. Even their “good works” are evidence of sin.
So how do I apply this verse to myself this morning? “We must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ,” Paul says. I ought to examine my heart every day and ask, “Do I believe in Jesus and what he did for me? Do I love him above all else with a thankful heart?” If you do, do not think about whether or not you have done good or bad, because whatever bad you have done is forgiven, and whatever good you do is evidence of Christ living in you. Thinking about your good works will not give you peace. Thinking about Jesus will!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I am confident that when I stand before your throne, I will meet God’s approval, because my robes are washed in your blood, and I am robed in your righteousness. Let me live each day serving you and my neighbor out of thankful love! Amen.
