2 Corinthians 5: 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (NIV)
This passage is worth memorizing and learning how to explain. It is sometimes called God’s Great Exchange. If you want to explain God’s plan of salvation in a simple and memorable way, just teach them this passage and what it means. God made Jesus, who had no sin, to be sin for us. The holy Son of God went to the cross and bored the sins of the world. God made him to be our sin for us. That’s why he felt that he was forsaken by God. The Father, who said he was well pleased with him at his baptism and his transfiguration, could not bear to look at his Son, because he became sin for us.
Can you imagine that? Jesus became your ugliest sin. He became your whole life of sin. He became the sin of every person who ever lived. Think of all the perversions you have seen in the world. The mass murders. The holocausts. Children abuse in terrible ways. People starving while the rich float on their yachts or hoard their investments. Jesus became all of that for us. He became our sin.
And in him, we became the righteousness of God. Think about that for a moment. You are who you are not. You are not defined by your sin but by the righteousness of Jesus. By faith in him, we have become righteous in God’s eyes. His perfect life is ours. His generosity. His kindness. His sending Satan away in the wilderness. Forgiving his enemies. Feeding the hungry. Forgiving and not judging the woman caught in adultery. Friending tax collectors and sinners. This is all yours and mine by faith. I am what I am not. I am defined by Jesus’ righteousness and not by my sin.
Can it be any clearer than this? Surely, you can teach someone this wonderful truth. You are an ambassador for Christ. God has given to you the message of reconciliation and boiled it down to just 22 words (15 in the Greek text). You can do this. You tell someone that God has changed their opinion about them – in Christ.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, it is so simple and so awesome at the same time! You became what you were not so that I might become what you are! Let this truth be cemented in my heart against all accusations that Satan may bring against me. And let this word be in my mouth that I may confess freely what you have done. Amen.
