2 Corinthians 7: 8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. (NIV)
Paul speaks beautifully in these verses about the emotional impact that repentance has on us. He talks about a godly sorrow that leads to repentance and a worldly sorrow that leads to death. When we are confronted with a sin that we are committing, our heart will experience sorrow in one of two ways. The worldly sorrow that Paul is talking about is sorrow over the fact that we can’t have it both ways. We cannot cling to God and to our sin at the same time. So we are sad. Sad that we can’t have our sin. Sad that our relationship with God is going to get in the way of what I really want, deep down inside of our sinful nature. Let’s admit it. Repentance is not easy. My sinful nature will pout and kick and scream and wail. This kind of sorrow in our heart leads to death, a life in which we choose to be ourselves instead of clinging to God.
Godly sorrow is something that only the Holy Spirit can work in our heart by his grace. It is a sorrow that we feel in our hearts because we have offended our holy and righteous and loving Father. It is a sorrow we feel, not because we must give up our treasured sin, but because for a moment sin has caused us to lose hold of our real treasure, Jesus. It is a sorrow that makes us angry, not with God, but with ourselves, because we have not kept God’s name holy in our hearts. Godly sorrow and true repentance leads to salvation and leaves no regret.
So we should ask ourselves the question, “In my life of repentance, what makes me sad? That I cannot take up my sin any longer? Or that I ever went down that road in the first place?” Godly sorrow brings true repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, love Divine, work in my heart godly sorrow for my sins that leads to repentance and that leaves no regrets. Turn my heart away from my sin and to my gracious Savior and his forgiveness! Amen
