2 Corinthians 8: 16 Thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative. 18 And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel. 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help. 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.
22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and co-worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it. (NIV)
Paul enunciates and practices an important principle that churches should follow when it comes to administering the gifts of God’s people. He says he wants to avoid any criticism in how they administer this gift, doing what is right, not only in God’s eyes, but in the eyes of men. For Paul, it meant that more than one trusted man was put in charge of taking this gift to Jerusalem and making sure it was used properly.
What does that mean for the church today? When a church gets sloppy in how it administers the gifts of God’s people, two things can happen. One, someone may be tempted to steal what God’s people gave to the Lord. I am sure you have heard of that happening. I have to deal with that, unfortunately, in the congregations I have served. Two, God’s people are hesitant to give if they do not think their gifts will be well used.
Some simple rules can prevent that from happening. Every account, even small accounts, should be audited every year. More than one person, preferably unrelated, should count the offerings and deposit them. A detailed budget should show how the offerings will be spent, and a detailed report should be given on how they were spent. You might argue that we should be able to trust Christians to handle the offerings of God’s people. Yet, every Christian has a sinful nature and can be tempted. So we aim to do what is right, not only in the eyes of God, but also in the eyes of men.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, forbid it that offerings given to you should ever be misused! Teach us to administer the gifts of God’s people carefully, lest the weak be tempted, or offense be given. Amen.
