2 Corinthians 13: 11 Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All God’s people here send their greetings. 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.  (NIV)

What a beautiful way to end a letter to this troublesome congregation! In some ways I miss writing and receiving letters. I found one I had written to my grandmother when I was a vicar in my twenties. My aunt must have given it back to me after my grandmother died. I had forgotten all about it. My first reaction to reading it was, “I actually wrote this?” It was a beautiful letter that must have warmed her heart.  It expressed thoughts and feelings and faith and my eagerness for the ministry at the time.  I know that emails are also a gift from God, because we can reach so many more people more quickly than ever. But, we write so many of them, that they often lack the depth and the feelings that written letters contained.

Paul wraps up this rather difficult letter to the Corinthians with positive words of encouragement for them. He reminds them to rejoice. Isn’t every day for a believer a good day, a day of grace from our God who is full of mercy? He encourages them to be of one mind and purpose. The divisions in Corinth were not helping the preaching of the gospel. He sends greetings and finally gives them the “apostolic blessing.”

What a wonderful way to end a letter. “”May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”  If we know the grace of our Savior, Jesus, and we live in the love of our heavenly Father, and we are one with the Holy Spirit, who lives in us, we have it all.  No matter what else is going on in our lives, life is good and we can rejoice!

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, be with me with your grace today and always, for only in you do I find peace and joy.  Father, let me know your abundant love and live each day as your child. Holy Spirit, dwell in me richly so that there is no room for sin and so that I am growing in faith each day.
