Matthew 21:28-32: 28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’ 29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go. 31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

These words to the leaders of the Jews must have started a fire of anger and hatred in their hearts!  How dare Jesus say that the tax collectors and the prostitutes were entering the kingdom of God ahead of them! They were church-going, law-abiding, fasting and tithing kind of people. How dare Jesus!  Jesus’ purpose was not to light a fire of anger in their hearts, but to call them to repentance, as John the Baptist had as well.

Has anyone ever truthfully pointed out your errors? What was your initial reaction? Even if the person spoke to you in a loving way, chances are your FIRST reaction was one of getting hot under the collar. “Who are YOU to point out MY sins?” We don’t like to be outed for our sinful behavior, even if we know they are right. There is a little Pharisee in each of us, in our sinful natures.

Be thankful when you have a friend who is not afraid to confront you with your sins and your spiritual faults. Jesus is speaking to you through them. And be especially thankful that you have a Savior who does not want you to walk down that road of self-righteousness to hell! Jesus called out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees in this story, not because he hated them, but because he loved them and wanted them to repent.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, thank you for calling me to repentance every day, and for sending me friends who are not afraid to speak the truth in love to me. Keep me from the sins of vanity and hypocrisy and pride, lest I travel the road that leads to condemnation.  I ask this in your name. Amen.
