Hebrews 6: 9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
There are two themes that run through the book of Hebrews. One is, “Jesus is better than …” anything we find in the Old Testament. The other focuses on the word “encourage.” God put us here and called us into a Christian family to encourage one another in our faith. These words from the writer to the Hebrews are very encouraging and give us a beautiful blueprint to follow in encouraging each other.
First, when you are talking to people who do believe, remember that they are God’s people. Their faith may be in a slump right now, but isn’t that true of any of us? Yet, God will not forget them! And he will not forget us. We are convinced that we will go to heaven, not because we are so strong in our faith, but because we have a God who is patient with us and who will shepherd us home to heaven. What you believe about yourself is also true of a weak brother or sister in Christ. Encourage them with the same encouragement that you have from God.
At the same time, let’s be honest with each other as we encourage each other. The writer to the Hebrews encourages his readers to be diligent and warns them about being lazy. If your brother or sister in Christ is going to church once a month, that’s not good and healthy for their faith. I would hope that if I were that person, someone would come and talk to me about my faithfulness to hearing God’s Word.
“Let us encourage one another.” Who do you know that you can encourage today?
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for connecting me to a Christian family, where people care about my faith enough to encourage me when I am weak. Give me the love and courage to also encourage my brother and sister in Christ in their faith. I ask this in our name. Amen.
