Hebrews 9: 11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

While the Old Testament covenant of sacrifices and priests and holy days and a tabernacle were shadows or pictures of what Christ would do when he came, Jesus is so much greater than any and all of those things. Because he was holy, he didn’t have to make a sacrifice for himself before he entered the REAL Holy of Holies. Then why did he offer his blood as a sacrifice?  Obviously, he did it for you and me and all people, to make an atonement for our sins.  Again, it was a “once for all” sacrifice. You could offer a zillion sacrifices for your sins, but your conscience would never come clean by them. You would always think, “Have I done enough?”  But the sacrifice of Jesus gives us peace because it is more than enough to make us holy in the sight of God.

A liberal church body was making a new hymnal and wanted to include the Getty song, “In Christ Alone.” There is a line in the song that they wanted to change.  They didn’t like the idea of a bloody sacrifice to appease God’s wrath and wanted to change the line “They wrath of God was satisfied.” They asked permission and were told, “No.”  That’s the whole point of the gospel message!  By the blood of Jesus, God’s wrath has been satisfied. Our sins are forgiven. And by faith in Jesus, we have become as unblemished as he was and is.

And to what end? Christ’s sacrifice doesn’t free us to sin more, but that we may serve the living God.  Fear of punishment cannot restrain my sin, but the full and free forgiveness of Christ, purchased by his own blood, can and does. “Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand!”

Prayer:   Lord Jesus, my world and my culture points to many religions and say that they are all the same. I know that is a lie. There is one God and one Savior. There is only one who shed his blood for me, and you are that Savior. I pray that I would not only not listen to those voices today, but give me a voice that proclaims you to the world as the only Savior in whom we have hope.  Amen.
