Hebrews 10: 26-30 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Are these frightening words?  Absolutely. They warn us against the sin against the Holy Spirit, which Jesus warned of in Mark 3:29.  It’s not the severity of the sin that the writer to the Hebrews is warning against. It’s more than a sin of weakness, or a sinful habit that you struggle against. This is an intentional, deliberate sin which you know is wrong and choose to do anyway. It rejects what Christ did to save us and treats his grace as an unholy thing. It insults the work of the Holy Spirit that is working in us.  If you are thinking to yourself, “Have I committed this sin?”, you have not, because you wouldn’t be concerned about it at all. If you are praying that God would forgive you and help you overcome a sin in your life, you have not committed this sin because you yearn for forgiveness and grace. At the same time, our sinful nature needs to hear these words lest we let any sin linger in our lives and become an idol for us.

I remember specifically in my ministry reading these words and explaining them to two different people. Both were Christians who knew better, but were committing a sin and refusing to repent of it. They even used God’s forgiveness as an excuse to keep on sinning. So I explained to them what it meant to trample under foot the blood of the covenant and insult the Spirit of grace. One repented quickly. The other repented at a later date. There are times when such a warning is in place.

Only, it is not just for others, but for us as well. Let no sin become our master, like Cain’s anger mastered him. Let no idolatry persist, as it did with the children of Israel. Fall into the arms of God’s grace and mercy in whom you believe lest you do fall into the hands of the living God whom you have rejected!

Prayer:   Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into my heart and expose every deed of darkness, every inclination of sin. Bring me comfort in the knowledge of the forgiveness which is mine in Jesus. Lead me in a life of daily repentance, lest any sin become my master!  I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
