Hebrews 13: 5 Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have. For God has said: I will never leave you, and I will never forsake you. 6 So then we say with confidence: The Lord is my helper, and I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?  (EHV)

Did you ever notice that children don’t seem to be obsessed with money? If you give them five dollars, they will probably spend it, or put it in their piggy bank, and then forget it. They don’t count it up and keep a tally so that they can buy the one big thing they’ve always wanted. Why is that? It’s simple. Mom and Dad buy their clothes. They put food on the table. They give them money for snacks or going to the movies. In other words, they trust that Mom and Dad will take care of them.

Isn’t that the point the writer to the Hebrews makes in these verses?  He quotes a verse from Deuteronomy, where Moses encourages his people not to worry when they come to the promised land, because God was with them.  The second verse is from Psalm 118, where the psalmist says we do not have to be afraid, because the Lord is our helper.  God provides for his people. He may not give us everything we want, because too often we want too much or things that aren’t even good for us. He’s like a good parent who doesn’t give us too much money to spend on candy because then we would make ourselves sick.

And when we trust in God to provide, then we can use our money for the things that count the most. We can share with a friend in need. We can give generously for the building of God’s kingdom. We don’t have to hoard it in fear that we will run out, because God will provide for us according to his abundant grace and goodness.  I suppose we could run out of money, but we will never run out of God.  Prayer:   Father, you said that you will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore I can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper and I will not be afraid.” Teach me to be obsessed with you, the One who gives all, and not with my money.  I ask this in Jesus’ name, through whom we have all things. Amen.
