1 Corinthians 11: 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after the meal, he also took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new testament in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (EHV)
How should we partake of the Lord’s Supper? What should we be thinking of when we come to the Table? Jesus said in the words of institution for this sacrament, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He wants us to think about what he has done for us, the sacrifice he made for us, to redeem us from our sins.
Remember and wonder at this great mystery! The very Son of God, the one who made the universe and who called out every star by name, came into your history and into mine. He was fragile and weak as any human being is. The only thing that separated his humanity from ours is sin. He was the innocent lamb of God. He was the one in whom the Father was well pleased. Yet, it was the Father’s will to crush him and to cause him to suffer, making him suffer for all the sins which we have committed.
Remember this, because this great act of injustice made it possible for God to be just and to justify the person who has faith in Jesus (Romans 3:26). When you celebrate the Lord’s Supper, remember Jesus, and remember that God has declared you innocent for Jesus’ sake. Your sins cannot convict you before God.
Remember Jesus, and what he did, and sin cannot hold you in its grip any longer. You will love Jesus and hate your sin. You will hate your sin even when you are committing it, because as long as we are in this world, we cannot escape the sinful nature inside of us. So you will be at war with yourself, and the body and blood of Jesus in this sacrament will give you strength to carry on that war.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I am your sin and you are my righteousness! I thank and praise you for your sacrifice on the cross, for through that sacrifice alone I am right with God. When I see what you suffered for me, move me to fight the good fight of faith against sin in my life. Give me strength for this day and every day according to your mercies. I ask this in your name. Amen.
