Mark 6:53-6: When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed. (NIV)
It was a long day for Jesus. It began with news that his cousin, John, had been beheaded. He went to be alone with his disciples, but the crowds followed him. He taught them all day and fed all five thousand miraculously. He went by himself to pray, but when his disciples were rowing against a storm, he walked to them on the water. As soon as they reached the shore, he was recognized, and he responded to the people with their needs. He didn’t become impatient. He didn’t lose his temper. Not even on a day when he pulled an all-nighter did the Son of Man falter in his perfect life.
There is one other day that would have topped this one. It began with a celebration of the Passover with his disciples. It ended with his betrayal and a trial before the Sanhedrin. I doubt if Jesus slept at all that night. He was dragged before the Sanhedrin again in the morning, and then Pilate, and Herod, and Pilate again. Finally, they crucified him, mocking him all the while. With all of that, even on that day he died for the sins of the world, he never lost his temper. He never spoke disrespectfully of those who maligned him. He was the perfect Son of God to the end.
Sometimes it is good just to sit back and admire Jesus. Wonder at his faultless life. Be amazed at his patience, his selflessness, his kindness, his perfect life of love. And then, above all, believe in him.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are my perfect Savior, who always did right and never did wrong. Thank you for being my substitute before God. Thank you for being my Savior and my God. Amen.
