Mark 10:46:-52: Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” 52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.  (NIV)

Am I asking too much? That is a question we probably ask every time we ask a favor of a family member or friend. We don’t want to burden their busy schedule. We don’t want to inconvenience them. We don’t want to put them through the embarrassment of having to deny the request when they aren’t able to do what we ask. So, we often don’t ask at all. Personally, I would rather have someone ask me for help because otherwise, how will I know when help is needed?

You never have to think this way when it comes to asking Jesus for anything. The blind man in Jericho heard that Jesus was passing by. Jesus was a busy man, on his way to Jerusalem. People told him to be quiet and not bother Jesus. It caused him to call out all the more. This beggar was not afraid to make his needs known. He had been bothering people all his life, hoping for a coin or two. He heard that Jesus was the Son of David, the Messiah, the one who made the lame walk, the deaf to hear, and the blind to see. So he asked boldly and loudly.

We are all beggars before the throne of God every day. Jesus wants us to know today that he is never bothered or annoyed by our requests, large or small. Jesus said in John 16:23:  “In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” Jesus promises to answer prayers. So be a beggar and ask loudly and boldly.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, give me the heart of a beggar when I come before your throne! I know that you are my dearest Friend and Savior and will not turn me away. Today, this is what I pray for:  ______ .   Amen.
