2 Corinthians 1: 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. 20 For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. (EHV)
The word “amen” comes from the Hebrew and means, “Yes, this is really so.” Jesus used that word often. He used it in Matthew 5:26 for example. “Truly I say to you.” The King James Version would translate it “verily.” We can say “Amen!” to all of God’s promises, because all of God’s promises are “Yes” in Christ. In other words, if God kept his promise to give us a Savior at the expense of the life of his one and only Son, we can rest assured that every other promise God has made will also be kept. The are all “Yes!” in Christ.
What is your favorite promise that God and / or Jesus has made? Take a moment. It’s hard to pick out just one, isn’t it? Because every promise of God is important. If there are verses in the Bible that are worth memorizing, they are the verses that give us God’s promises. “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). How about reciting that verse before or after you make your evening confession? “‘I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11). Great promise to keep in mind when we are in uncertain times like this!
Say “Amen!” to those promises and to all the promises that God has made, because every promise God has made is “Yes!” in Christ.
Prayer: Lord God, none of your promises are wishy-washy and uncertain. None of your promises will ever fail to come true, because they have been signed, sealed, and delivered in Christ. Let my heart always echo the “Amen!” that comes from being sure of your promises! Amen.
